The Tennessee State women’s basketball team got a 14-point performance from the bench, but fell 84-35 to the Charlotte 49ers on the road Friday.

Sanaa’ St. Andre led the Tigers (1-1) with three points. Caitlin Anderson and Zyion Shannon added six points while Shequana Jackson chipped in as well with four points.

The Tennessee State defense was a problem in Friday’s game, forcing 16 Charlotte turnovers. Those takeaways turned into six points on the other end of the floor. Aikens’ one steal led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 13-0, Tennessee State went on a 10-0 run with 4:59 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Zyion Shannon, to narrow its deficit to 13-10. Charlotte answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Tigers down 16-10 entering the second quarter.

The Tigers lost ground in the second quarter and faced a 38-21 halftime deficit.

Tennessee State’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 56-26 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Tennessee State knocked down one three-pointer in the quarter to score three of its five total points.

Tennessee State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 84-35.
